Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.” The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and He will be called the Son of God.” Mark 1:34-35
This story is recounting when Mary first finds out she is carrying the Son of God within her. She is about to jump into a new season. God is doing a new thing inside of her and through her. She is undoubtedly a bit scared and nervous, unsure of all that it will entail. But she boldly steps into her new role. She lets go of her own ideas and plans for her life. She is obedient and faithful. She let’s God steal her show and have free reign in her life. She submits to the Holy Spirit “overshadowing” her. She let’s God take center stage and outshine her so He might do amazing things.
Often the biggest thing in the way of the Holy Spirit working in our lives is our pride. Sometimes we want to do big things for God so we can look amazing, or even competent. So we try to pull off grand plans on our own, in our own strength. Or we don’t allow God to work through us at all because we don’t want to look foolish or mess it up. But that is still pride. Its still wanting your way over God’s way. Letting God’s Spirit overshadow you is about letting His will take precedence over your wants. Its about you getting out of His way. Its about submission so He can do big things in and through you.
Take a moment to examine your heart and repent of any pride. Let go of you running the show. Ask the Holy Spirit what He is wanting to birth in you. What is He wanting to do through you? Spend a few minutes praying through that, chewing on His plans and wholeheartedly submitting to them. Then get ready to enjoy the show!
