Waiting for the Holy Spirit

Diving In is our online mid-week devotional. It jumps into the message from Sunday and takes you a little deeper. Take a moment to slow down from your busy day, and hear from the Holy Spirit.  On one occasion, while Jesus was eating with them, He gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about”…”But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:4 and 8

Waiting on God’s timing is rough. We often feel like we know when to move. When it’s “time” for whatever we are waiting on. We are ready for the new season to begin, for the promotion, the new house, the new job, the “whatever” that we are ready for. We have a plan and we are ready to get moving on it.

But often God’s timing is very different than ours. He can see the whole picture. Jesus knew that making the disciples wait in Jerusalem was strategic for His Kingdom, His plan. He knows what He is doing. He was up to something big.

God has a big plan for your life. He is orchestrating things we cannot see yet. Often He is asking us to wait on His Holy Spirit and His timing. If we run off on our own we will most likely miss out on God’s best for us. We may never see anything miraculous or jaw-dropping if we try to do things in our strength, in our timing.

But when we wait on the Holy Spirit, when we submit to His timing, we can be apart of something huge. When we submit to God’s Spirit, we get to join God in Him changing our community. Spend some time this week laying down your plans and choosing into God’s timing and His plans for your life. Ask His Holy Spirit to fill you and wait for Him to do so. And when He does, go out and be His witnesses. Be a part of reaching the ends of the earth for Christ!
