Real Rest

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” (Matt 11:28-30 The Message)

Jesus is unwrapping the concept of true rest for us here. Often when I think of rest, I imagine myself laying on the couch reading a magazine, or maybe watching TV or even just doing nothing. But Jesus’ picture of rest here is different. He paints an image of an ox in a field pulling a yoke. That doesn’t sound restful at all to me.

But our God knows us best. He formed us, and created us. He knows where our souls will be the most at peace. Jesus is describing how to really rest, to choose into His plan and serve Him. His grace is the most restful. He will not overwhelm you or give you the wrong assignment. When we choose into obedience and submission to Jesus there our heart can truly rest.

As you think about your day, think about all the things you have on your plate. Make a mental list of all the things you want to accomplish today. And then hand that list over to Jesus. Let Him be in control. Let Him place his yoke on you and choose into his assignment for you today.
