Leaving Behind the Old Ways

Brothers and sisters, God has shown you His mercy. So I am asking you to offer up your bodies to Him while you are still alive. Your bodies are a holy sacrifice that is pleasing to God. When you offer your bodies to God, you are worshiping Him. Don’t live any longer the way this world lives. Let your way of thinking be completely changed. Then you will be able to test what God wants for you. And you will agree that what He wants is right. His plan is good and pleasing and perfect.” Rom 12:1-2

Spend a moment with me, thinking about how you have seen God’s mercy today. How have you seen Him be gracious and merciful to you as you went about your day? How did He provide for you and care for you beyond what you deserved?

Now God is asking you to give something back to Him. Not as payment for His mercy, but as an offering of thanksgiving and gratitude. He is calling us to give our whole selves back to Him. Jesus sacrificed Himself on a cross. He let Himself be killed, so we could experience life abundantly (John 10:10). And now God is asking us to sacrifice. But He isn’t asking us to climb up on a cross, but rather to lay down our will and let Him be in charge.

God doesn’t want you to keep living your life the way you have been living it. We can get wrapped up in bad patterns and habits. We are easily consumed with fitting in and keeping up with the world, and we soon resemble it in many ways. But God is asking us to take a step in a new direction. To leave behind the old ways and let His Holy Spirit transform you. Jesus wants to make you new! He wants to take away all the parts of you that are not His best, and use you in mighty ways to accomplish His plan’s.

Don’t live any longer in the old way of things. Leave your junk behind and climb up on God’s altar. He is gentle. His plans are always good. Submit to Him and join Him in His new adventure for your life.
