Good Gifts

So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

“Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” Luke 11:9-13

Jesus gives us a simple promise here. When we seek God, when we ask Him for His Spirit, He will give Him to us. He uses the example of a father giving good gifts to his children. I am not a perfect mom, I make a ton of mistakes. But I know how to give my kids presents on their birthdays or on Christmas morning. I love the image here. God is such a sweet Father, He is a million times better at parenting than I am. And He will give me His Spirit when I ask Him.

I can try to do things on my own. I can act like a child and try to run my life on my own strength, but I will always come up short. I am never enough. But my sweet Father has promised life to the full (John 10:10) if I will just choose in. If I lay down my will and choose to submit to my Father; He has promised to fill me with His Spirit so I can do great things. It’s not that I am great, but Jesus living through me is an awesome thing to witness. I get to display the greatness of God’s power when I let Him live through me.

Holy Spirit, I declare I need you to come. I cannot do great things on my own. I cannot do much of anything on my own. But Your word says if I seek You and wait on You, that You will show up. You will answer my knocking. You will come through for me. You are a great Father. I lay down my way of doing things and receive Your Holy Spirit. Keep filling me Holy Spirit. Would you be on display through me today.
