Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them. Remember the day you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb, when he said to me, “Assemble the people before me to hear my words so that they may learn to revere me as long as they live in the land and may teach them to their children.” Deut 4:9-10
The Lord is telling His people to not forget what they have experienced in His presence. They are to keep the memory of those events fresh on their hearts. I know that for myself there are key moments in my life where God showed up in big ways that changed me. When I think about those times I am encouraged to continue following God and trusting in Him. However, God does not stop there. It is not enough for us to simply hold on to the memories of how God has met us. We are to teach these moments to our children. We are to share with them our experiences, so that they too may have a better understanding of who God is. For as they hear about who God has been to us they might also be encouraged to put their trust in Him.
I want you to spend a moment and think about one of the life changing moments that you have had with God. Think about what happened and how you felt and how it has impacted you since that moment. Now that you have that moment fresh in your heart share it with someone. Share it with your children or their children. Share it with someone from the generation after you. Pass on your experiences with God, so those who come after you may benefit from your walk with God. Often when a generation fails to pass on their faith well the next generation misses out on so much that God has for them and turns away from God. Let us be men and women who pass the baton on well. This week I encourage you to seek out someone younger of another generation and share with them who God has been to you.
God, help us to be people that always remember what You have done for us. May we keep those moments forever fresh in our hearts. Would You help us to seek out those of the next generation to share with them and teach them who You are.
