Where should you be?

In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with the king’s men and the whole Israelite army. They destroyed the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained in Jerusalem. From 2 Samuel 11

It’s spring, David is home in his palace. David should be off at war. Spring was the time when everyone would go to war since the weather was the most conducive for it. But this time, David stays home. He sends Joab with his army off to fight the Ammonites.

So he stays home, and an ugly story unfolds after these verses. David ends up on the roof of his house. Since the palace would have likely been the tallest building in Jerusalem and David has sent most of the men off to war…he has positioned himself in a city with way too much temptation and not very much opposition to temptation. From the roof he sees Bathsheba, bathing on her roof. David sends for her, impregnates her, and then ends up killing her husband and other soldiers just to cover it up.

And all this starts because David wasn’t where he should have been. He should have been at way. He should have been sleeping on the ground in a tent with a bunch of sweaty soldiers. He should have been fighting the Ammonites, kicking them out of their promised land, being obedient and brave for the Lord. But he isn’t. He is at home, in his palace where he shouldn’t be. And because he isn’t where he should be, he gives into temptation and sin takes over, again and again. He ends up lusting after another man’s wife, being an adulterer, a liar, and a murderer.

So where are you at? I don’t know where you are at, or what sin you struggle with? Are you where you should be? Are you off at war, fighting the battle God has assigned to you? Or are you a home…about to walk upstairs on the roof?

Jesus, would you reveal where I should be today?
