The Race

Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

This passage comes right after the list of all the people in the Bible who have demonstrated extra-ordinary faith. People that have gone before us and modeled what a Spirit-filled life should look life. Men and women who took risks, did crazy things, and saw God show up in huge ways in their everyday lives. And these words above should be our response to hearing those stories.

At Cornerstone we have spent the last year re-visiting these stories. We have read them with fresh eyes and unpacked how these regular people have done great things for God when they choose to give Him their lives and be obedient in the moment. So here I am, in the same spot this Hebrew church was in two thousand years ago. What is my response to these words? What is my response to this challenge?

I dont want to hear these powerful words and do nothing. I don’t want this Monday morning to look like every other Monday morning. I want to draw a line for myself in the sand. I want to be inspired, for my gut to churn with excitement and anticipation at all that I expect God to do through me this week! I need Jesus to wake me up, light a fire inside of me, that will not be put out. I want to be a bold, courageous woman who runs the race hard, not just sits on the sidelines.

I love that image of throwing off everything that entangles me. Think about your day, your week. A lot of what keeps you and I from being effective Jesus followers is things like business, laziness, apathy, fear, lack of belief that God will show up (even when He has promised to do so). Will you join me in sending today throwing off EVERYTHING that entangles. Let’s not start another week being bogged down by all these ropes and traps that get us no where. Let us finally run the race!

Jesus I want to throw off all my Apathy, All my priorities that are not in alignment with Yours. I want you to strip off anything that is entangling me from being obedient and running hard this race you have set before me.
